Navigating interfaith marriage

We are committed to helping marriages grow strong and sharing a relationship with the Lord is central to that strength. The deposits and fees required are used to cover the basic cost incurred for the use of the facilities. Because we have so many different ministries here at Grace we need to limit weddings on campus to members and those closely associated with Grace. Consequently, it is our general practice to not be involved with weddings where only one of the couple is a Christ-follower. We believe marriage has been ordained by God. We as a church recognize marriage as exclusively the lifetime legal union of one man and one woman in which such union continues until death of the man or the woman. We do believe that God designed marriage for unbelievers as well, and will officiate off-site weddings where both candidates are unbelievers while understanding the privilege we have to share the Gospel with them during the pre-marital planning meetings.

However, when my boyfriend and I began dating last year, I quickly realized that I was not prepared for what to expect in this new season of life and ministry. When I asked a group of women in ministry for advice about dating while serving on church staff, I received blank stares.

Men preparing for the ministry can easily become blindly ambitious, even idolatrous, without realizing it. When that happens, we risk turning our wives into means to making much of ourselves. If they get in the way of our goals, we run them over.

It has taken me a long time to realize how vulnerable our wives are to us. They take our name. They live with the consequences of our decisions.

It’s his job to articulate the public-alcohol views of the Southern Baptist Convention, and part with that is taking stock of where congregations stand. He qualified this in an interesting church: Testifying to wine, even fundamental views about beliefs and marriage, can be civil. It’s tempting to look for cracks with the evangelical worldview in this acknowledgment. It’s even more tempting to look for signs of a female “divorce church” victory , especially considering the recent sweep of same-sex marriage legalizations.

But there are a few problems with trying to detect these kinds of rules among Christian beliefs, and particularly Baptists.
